In hotel and restaurant projects, lighting shapes both the atmosphere and the day-to-day running of the business. The difference from residential work is that the same design is repeated dozens of times, spaces are used for different purposes through the day, and maintenance has to be easy. This guide collects the questions we often hear at project stage into a checklist.
1. Divide spaces into layers
Answer three questions for each area: where will the general light come from, what light will be on the walls, and which points will be highlighted? In a lobby, a large chandelier or a group of pendants provides the general light while wall sconces add depth; the reception desk and seating groups are completed with table and floor lamps.
2. Decide on repeated designs early
In repeated areas such as hotel rooms and restaurant tables, the chosen design makes up much of the project. Deciding on these early makes it easier to check that size, material and finish match the other pieces.
3. Consistent materials and finishes
Finishes such as brass, aged brass, bronze, black and nickel can be mixed in one space, but choosing a main tone for each area gives a unified look. If the main tone chosen for the lobby is repeated in corridor and room sconces, guests feel a continuity between spaces.
4. Size and ceiling height
In lobbies and restaurants, chandelier size depends on ceiling height and the size of the area. For the calculation, see our guide to chandelier size. The bottom of a pendant above a restaurant table is usually about 75–90 cm above the table top.
5. Use and maintenance
Fixtures in commercial spaces are cleaned often. When choosing fabric shades, open glass or open metal bodies, consider how easy they are to clean. For brass surfaces, see our guide to caring for brass lighting.
6. Outdoors
For entrances, terraces and gardens, tell us whether each wall light will be on an open facade or under the eaves. For more, see our guide to choosing outdoor wall lights.
7. The quote process
Simply send us the product codes (OZ-…) and quantities for your project. Custom size and finish requests are assessed during the quote. For architects and interior designers, OZENPRO membership makes the project process easier.
