In outdoor lighting, technical durability matters as much as visual design. If a wall sconce or lantern exposed to rain, moisture and dust does not have the right IP rating, even the most elegant design can fail in a short time. In this guide we explain what the IP rating means and what to look for in your outdoor project.
What Is an IP Rating?
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is a two-digit code that shows how well a fixture is protected against solid objects (dust) and water. The first digit indicates the level of dust protection (0-6), the second the level of water protection (0-9). For example, IP65 means fully dust-tight and resistant to water jets from any direction.
Which IP Rating Is Enough Outdoors?
IP44 is usually sufficient for a porch or entrance sconce sheltered from rain. For fixtures directly exposed in open gardens, terraces or façades, at least IP65 is recommended. Poolside or in-ground lighting requires higher ratings such as IP67 or IP68.
Material Durability and Maintenance
The fixture’s body material matters as much as its IP rating. Brass and stainless steel are naturally more resistant to outdoor conditions, and the patina that forms over time is usually a desired effect. Wiping regularly with a slightly damp cloth, and in areas close to salty sea air, carrying out protective maintenance once a year, extends the life of the fixture.
