How to Choose a Floor Lamp: Size and Style Guide for Reading Corners and Living Rooms

Delta Adjustable Floor Lamp

A floor lamp is the most practical way to light a corner without relying on the ceiling light. Because it stands on the floor, it needs no wall or ceiling mounting; it is portable, can move from room to room and only needs a socket. A well-chosen floor lamp is both a functional reading light and an object that sets the mood of the room.

Types of floor lamp: what each one is for

  • Shaded floor lamp: a fabric or linen shade filters the light and gives the room soft, diffused light. Suited to living room corners and bedrooms.
  • Reading floor lamp (arm, jointed or adjustable head): focuses the light on a specific spot, such as the page of a book. Ideal beside an armchair or in a work corner.
  • Multi-light floor lamp: with two or three heads it gives both ambient and reading light, lighting a corner of a large living room with a single piece.
  • Opal glass floor lamp: a glass globe or cylinder spreads light evenly in every direction and has a sculptural, simple look.

The right height

For a floor lamp used for reading, the most important measurement is the height of the light relative to where you sit. If the bottom edge of the shade is roughly at shoulder height when you are seated, the light reaches the page without casting a shadow and without shining directly in your eyes. For shaded designs used as ambient light, a taller body spreads the light more widely across the room.

Where to place it

Place a reading floor lamp beside or slightly behind your armchair; if you turn pages with your right hand, light coming from behind your left shoulder reduces shadows. In the living room, floor lamps usually go in the corners or at the ends of the sofa, lighting the edges of the room so the space looks larger and warmer.

Do not forget the size of the base: a wide, heavy base (marble or cast metal) keeps the lamp stable, while slim-base or tripod designs take up less space in a narrow corner.

Matching materials and finishes

When the material of the floor lamp is considered together with the other lights in the room, the space looks coherent. A brass body develops a natural patina over time and gives a warm tone; nickel and black metal carry a more modern, crisp line; wood and marble add natural texture. Choosing a chandelier, wall sconce and floor lamp in the same finish brings a calm order to the room.

Light and bulbs

Warm white light in the 2700–3000 K range creates a comfortable atmosphere in seating areas. Choose a bulb bright enough for reading; if you want to adjust the light, you can use a dimmable bulb with a dimmer switch. Bulbs are not included with OZENDECO floor lamps; all products are compatible with 110–220 V mains.

In short

  • For reading: a reading floor lamp with an arm or adjustable head.
  • For ambient light: a shaded or opal glass design.
  • Height: when seated, the bottom edge of the shade roughly at shoulder height.
  • Placement: beside or slightly behind the armchair; in the living room, in the corners.
  • Material: in the same finish as the other lights in the room.
