Desk Lighting: How to Choose the Right Table Lamp for Your Workspace

Focus Table Lamp

When you work or read at home, the light on your desk directly affects both eye strain and focus. A desk lit only by the ceiling light gets shadows, and the difference in brightness between the screen and its surroundings tires the eyes. A well-chosen table lamp puts light exactly where it is needed and adds character to the desk.

Which type of table lamp?

  • Desk lamps with a metal head focus the light downwards onto the work surface; they are the most efficient choice for writing and reading.
  • Arm, jointed or adjustable-head designs let you direct the light to any spot you need.
  • Banker-style lamps light a wide desk area evenly with their horizontal shade and offer a classic look.
  • Fabric-shade or opal glass designs give softer ambient light and work well as a second light alongside the task light.

Position: which side should the light come from?

If you write with your right hand, place the lamp on the left side of the desk; if you write with your left hand, place it on the right. This way your hand does not cast a shadow where you are writing. If you work at a computer, place the lamp beside and slightly in front of the screen, making sure the light does not reflect on it.

Height and scale

When you are seated, if the bottom edge of the lamp head is roughly below eye level, the light does not shine directly into your eyes. Choose a lamp in proportion to the width of the desk: a slim, narrow-base design suits a small secretary desk, while a larger head or banker-style lamp looks balanced on a wide work desk.

Colour temperature and brightness

For focused work, neutral white light in the 3000–4000 K range makes reading and concentrating easier; for a more restful atmosphere in the evening, warm white at 2700–3000 K can be preferred. If you want to adjust the light for different tasks during the day, you can use a dimmable bulb with a compatible dimmer. Bulbs are not included with OZENDECO table lamps; all products are compatible with 110–220 V mains.

Do not forget ambient light

Working in a dark room with only a desk lamp tires the eyes because of the contrast between the bright desk and the dark surroundings. Providing low-level ambient light in the room with a ceiling light, wall sconce or floor lamp reduces this contrast and makes long working hours more comfortable.

In short

  • Type: a metal-head or adjustable desk lamp for work.
  • Position: on the side opposite your writing hand, without reflecting on the screen.
  • Height: the bottom edge of the head below eye level when seated.
  • Light: neutral white for work, warm white in the evening, plus ambient light in the room.
