How to Plan Bedroom Lighting: A Guide to Chandeliers, Wall Sconces and Bedside Lamps

The bedroom is the room where light changes the most during the day: you want clear light while getting dressed in the morning, focused light for reading in the evening and soft, low light before sleep. A single ceiling light cannot meet all of these needs. That is why bedroom lighting is planned in layers, with several light sources that complement each other.

1. General light: a ceiling chandelier or pendant

The general light of the room comes from a chandelier or pendant on the ceiling. In the bedroom, softness matters more than drama; opal glass, fabric shades or designs that throw light upwards light the room without tiring the eyes. In rooms with a ceiling height of 260–280 cm, flush or short-drop designs leave comfortable headroom.

Placing the chandelier in the centre of the room or towards the foot of the bed, rather than directly above it, keeps the light out of your eyes when lying down. You can browse our chandeliers and pendants with this in mind.

2. Above the bed: wall sconces

Wall sconces mounted above the bed give reading light without taking up space on the nightstand, and they give the room a symmetrical, orderly look. Designs with an arm or an adjustable head focus the light on the page, while opal glass or shaded designs create softer ambient light.

  • Mounting height: a sconce is usually about 60–75 cm above the top of the mattress; when you sit up in bed, the light source should be slightly above eye level.
  • Distance from the bed: the sconce sits 15–30 cm outside the edge of the bed, or lines up with the centre of the nightstand.
  • Switch: plan the switch within reach so you can turn the light off without getting up.

See our wall sconce collection for designs that suit the bedside.

3. Bedside table lamp

If you would rather not mount sconces on the wall, a bedside lamp is the most flexible solution. When choosing its height, consider the nightstand and the bed together: when you sit up in bed, the bottom edge of the shade should be roughly at chin height so the light reaches the book without shining in your eyes. Fabric shades give warm, diffused light, while metal heads give more focused light.

4. Reading corner: a floor lamp

If the bedroom has an armchair or a reading corner, a floor lamp beside the chair keeps that corner usable even when the ceiling light is off. A shaded floor lamp adds a low, warm layer of light to the room.

5. Colour temperature and dimming

Warm white light of around 2700 K creates a restful atmosphere in the bedroom. If possible, put the general light and the bedside lights on separate switches; a dimmable bulb with a compatible dimmer lets you lower the light in the evening as needed. Bulbs are not included with OZENDECO fixtures, so you can choose the bulb for the colour temperature you prefer.

Quick checklist

  • General light: a chandelier or pendant with soft light.
  • Bedside: a wall sconce or table lamp on each side.
  • Reading corner: a floor lamp beside the armchair.
  • Pieces in the same material and finish (for example brass or nickel) for a coherent look.
  • Warm white light and, if possible, separate switches or a dimmer.
