The heart of a living room is usually a chandelier hanging from the ceiling; a well-chosen pendant chandelier can define the space on its own. But the wrong scale, the wrong height or a light temperature unsuited to the space can take even the most impressive chandelier away from its purpose. Here is a practical guide you can follow when choosing the right pendant chandelier for your living room.

Chandelier Size According to the Scale of the Room

A simple rule: add up the width and length of the room (in metres) and convert the total to centimetres, and you get the approximate diameter of the chandelier. For example, for a 4×5 metre living room, a chandelier about 90 cm in diameter gives a balanced look. This ratio keeps the chandelier from getting lost in the space or becoming overly dominant.

The Right Hanging Height

In a living room with a standard ceiling height (about 2.7 metres), the bottom of the chandelier should ideally be 2 – 2.2 metres above the floor. If it will hang over a dining table, positioning it 70-90 cm above the tabletop neither disturbs the line of sight nor compromises adequate lighting.

Number of Lights and Colour Temperature

A multi-arm pendant chandelier provides both general lighting and a visual focal point; however, it is recommended that it not be the room’s only light source and that it be supported by complementary sources such as side lamps and recessed spots. In living rooms with high ceilings or in duplex layouts, pendant chandeliers with long chains and a strong vertical emphasis accentuate the sense of height and give a more striking result.
